Happy to spend some time at Cape Cod again, I offered to cat sit for a week in July while my son and his wife visited friends in another state. The summer crowds were in full force, and there were hour-long lines or reservations required at restaurants in Falmouth. (Pictures of downtown and nearby Woods Hole in a previous blog post at Falmouth, Woods Hole.) A nature trail with croaking frogs made for a convenient shortcut to the library and shops from their house. I took long walks or drives during the days, ate tasty seafood dinners out, and spent late afternoons and evenings relaxing with the cat at home.

Parking was full at most beach destinations, so I walked. The Shining Sea Bikeway was originally a railroad route to Woods Hole from 1872 to 1965. Now it’s a quiet green-bordered stripe of pavement frequented by bikers, walkers, skaters and skateboarders, and baby carriers, that spans the western end of Cape Cod north to south, paralleling the Vineyard Sound coast. It was a short walk to find the bike path from downtown Falmouth.

I followed the path south to Falmouth Beach. It always warms my heart to walk the sands in bare feet and watch the waves roll in, gentle on this day. Unfortunately, one couldn’t walk along the sandy shoreline to Surf Beach. I had to walk along the road because the stretch that connects the two is private.

The low fencing prevents flightless Piping Plover and Least Tern chicks from wandering into the road.

On the way back, I didn’t find the bike path again. Instead, I was pleased to discover this pop-up eatery for a lobster roll.

My companion for the week was the affectionate orange tabby Malcolm, also known as Mr. Meows or just Meows. Here he is playing with a favorite toy. I miss having pets!

Cape Cod looks gorgeous! I haven’t been there, but from your photos, it looks like a tranquil, seaside area with plenty of delicious, fresh seafood to boot! Glad you had a wonderful time with family over there. 🙂

The man who has the dog mailbox came out to chat with me as I took that photo. He told me that when children walk by going to the nearby school, some of them pat the dog as they pass!

Thank you. There are some bike paths through many scenic areas in the mountains where I live. There are in some places, but not everywhere around the U.S.

What a beautiful place – and cat! I love the white picket fence, the sandy beach (a shame part of it is private) and the little details such as the mailboxes 🙂

There are so many pretty little details in that area. I’m glad to be able to spend some time there. The mailboxes were fun, all just a few blocks from the house where I was staying.

Taking care of a cat sounds like the perfect opportunity for a real vacation (at least, if yours is anything like our cat). My favorite photo is the tall-masted boat with the beachside foliage in the foreground. Very “New England”.

It’s a relaxing way to spend time there, and I do enjoy the cat time. The boat passing by was a surprise moment.

I do enjoy spending time there. I stayed in Boston for a few days after the Cape (posts coming soon) and it’s a great city. Meows is a sweetie. Thanks for reading!

Cute cat! I’ve considered getting something like that for our cats, but you never know when a cat toy is going to be a total dud, and a lot of them are expensive! Hmmm… now you’ve got me thinking.

It makes me laugh when he does it! He doesn’t pay much attention to his other toys. My cat, when I had her, had been in a hoarding house with many cats and didn’t know how to play with toys. They are as different as people!

They certainly are. We got to see the kitties interact with a 2-, 4-, and 6-year old the other day. Two totally different feline responses.
