My last few days on Cape Cod this trip took me a few drives away. In 2021, I had arranged to meet a longtime friend but a ferocious storm blew in (Nor’easter) upending any plans. This time, we met in Duxbury for lunch, a town between the Cape and her home near Boston. Rowers were learning their skills in the nearby harbor.
Those who knew the area urged me to catch the annual Hydrangea festival in Sandwich, on the northwest corner of the Cape. Held at the Heritage Museums & Gardens, there was so much to see in the gardens besides the famous flowers. Paths wind through varied and colorful terraces and nooks in a sprawling green park. (I didn’t have time to check out the museums since I had committed to picking up my son and his wife at the airport in the afternoon.)
The love of the gardeners for their creations and the design of the clusters of diverse plants were evident; representing every color in the rainbow. Although I was there to see the extensive display of the flowers I knew as snowballs as a child, my favorites were the Day Lilies.
My calendar was open for the next week so instead of heading back home after my Cape Cod visit, I spent most of the week in Boston, wandering around, a city I had yet to explore. Check back soon for Boston stories and photos.

Wish I could get all my different colored day lilies to bloom at the same time like that. Pretty photos and lovely views of the water.

They are truly master gardeners. I’m lucky to get some wildflowers to bloom at this altitude (and my not-green thumb). Thank you!

Those gardens look lovely – and so do the scallops!

I don’t usually take food photos unless they are especially lovely, and delicious!

Same here. When I used to write reviews for Virtual Tourist I took them all the time but now the plate has to look especially lovely or unusual!

Oh wow it’s so beautiful. Your windmill photo is stunning and I love all the lilies. I have a patch in my garden but they never look that good. The scallops have made me hungry too 🙂

Thanks so much, Hannah. I’m not much of a gardener so I really appreciate those who can grow such beautiful plants. The scallops were delish!

I’m such a fan of hydrangeas and I can’t help but be reminded of Cape Cod whenever I see some. I actually planted a couple outside the front of our house last spring. Glad you managed to catch the hydrangea festival. Your pictures look so pretty.

I probably wouldn’t have gone to the gardens if I hadn’t heard about the hydrangea festival.
Glad I did! Thanks so much.

I love those big, luscious hydrangea blooms and how they adorn a garden majestically and provide large, colourful balls of bloom that fit perfectly in any home from a farmhouse to a castle.
These beauties are a staple in most coastal towns in Ireland and if you happen to visit when they are at their peak, it is a sight to behold! Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I didn’t know they were so popular in Ireland. The display at these gardens were dazzling! Thanks, Aiva.

I love that multi-coloured bird sculpture. So many large sculptures in gardens are just awful, but that one’s a beauty

I suspect there is a story to each of those sculptures. The bird is tall and lovely.
