Sailing on the Mystic

I stayed the night at an inn in Mystic. A beautiful blue sky awaited as I walked into town, watching the shop owners open their doors, getting ready for the day. I had one more activity planned before driving back to Cape Cod; to go sailing!

When I booked the two-hour ride weeks before, I had hoped for the sunset cruise for the previous night, but all that was left available was the noon time spot, so I took it. The Argia leaves from Steamboat Wharf on the downtown Mystic shore, just a few steps from the drawbridge. The specifications describe her as a Chesapeake Gaff Tops’l Coasting Schooner, and she claims to be the last commercial sailing ship left still operating in Mystic. She’s small and graceful.

I’ve borrowed a photo from the Argia website to show her in full sail.

Moving south, we passed by Morgan Point Lighthouse at the mouth of the Mystic River. We were regaled by stories of history and seafaring by the crew, once they raised the sails and got underway.

We sailed slowly in the smooth waves of Fishers Island Sound, dotted with small islands. One or more of those islands are privately owned and hosted lavish parties, including famous movie star guests back in the days of black-and-white film. What a glorious day, sitting out on the wooden deck, enjoying a mild breeze and the rocking motion of the Argia.

  1. A sunset cruise would have been spectacular obviously, but I’d say you didn’t do too badly Ruth. While in Mystic one surely has to get out on a sailboat, when in Rome and all that. Glad the cruise went slowly, taking its time to reveal all the islands and points of interest. The sails themselves are magnificent, works of art in their own right I think. I would love to go exploring in and around Morgan Point Lighthouse.

    1. The weather and the waves cooperated, so I was thrilled to take the ride. That lighthouse is not open to the public, but it sits on a lovely outcropping. Thanks for reading and your comment, as always, Leighton!

  2. Absolutely gorgeous! I was just in New England this past weekend, but alas did not make it over to Mystic, let alone Connecticut…the weather looks lovely during your sail along the water (it was freezing during my trip, haha)! Glad you got to enjoy the cruise and to explore the area from a different perspective 🙂
