I stayed the night at an inn in Mystic. A beautiful blue sky awaited as I walked into town, watching the shop owners open their doors, getting ready for the day. I had one more activity planned before driving back to Cape Cod; to go sailing!
When I booked the two-hour ride weeks before, I had hoped for the sunset cruise for the previous night, but all that was left available was the noon time spot, so I took it. The Argia leaves from Steamboat Wharf on the downtown Mystic shore, just a few steps from the drawbridge. The specifications describe her as a Chesapeake Gaff Tops’l Coasting Schooner, and she claims to be the last commercial sailing ship left still operating in Mystic. She’s small and graceful.
I’ve borrowed a photo from the Argia website to show her in full sail.

Moving south, we passed by Morgan Point Lighthouse at the mouth of the Mystic River. We were regaled by stories of history and seafaring by the crew, once they raised the sails and got underway.

We sailed slowly in the smooth waves of Fishers Island Sound, dotted with small islands. One or more of those islands are privately owned and hosted lavish parties, including famous movie star guests back in the days of black-and-white film. What a glorious day, sitting out on the wooden deck, enjoying a mild breeze and the rocking motion of the Argia.

While you didn’t get your sunset cruise, at least you got to enjoy some beautiful blue skies for your sail. Beautiful set of pictures.

A sunset cruise would have been spectacular obviously, but I’d say you didn’t do too badly Ruth. While in Mystic one surely has to get out on a sailboat, when in Rome and all that. Glad the cruise went slowly, taking its time to reveal all the islands and points of interest. The sails themselves are magnificent, works of art in their own right I think. I would love to go exploring in and around Morgan Point Lighthouse.

The weather and the waves cooperated, so I was thrilled to take the ride. That lighthouse is not open to the public, but it sits on a lovely outcropping. Thanks for reading and your comment, as always, Leighton!

What a fun experience! I’ve never been on a sail boat. Seems like not too bad of an alternative to a sunset cruise.

The sunset one would have been on the same sailboat as well. But midday was a great time to be out on the water under a blue sky!

Your cruise looks appealing to me. It’s been too many years since I’ve sailed like that.

Oddly enough, I have been in rowboats, kayaking, and motorboats, but had never been sailing. So it was quite fascinating to see all the work that needs to be done as well as enjoy the ride.

Sailing in the original sense is about teamwork with the accent on work.

What a great idea. I’d never get the Husband off the ship, though!

A passenger volunteer helped to hoist the sails and tie them down. I could see the Husband doing that! 😉

What a wonderful experience! I can never resist a boat trip, but to have one under sail must have been particularly special 🙂

Absolutely gorgeous! I was just in New England this past weekend, but alas did not make it over to Mystic, let alone Connecticut…the weather looks lovely during your sail along the water (it was freezing during my trip, haha)! Glad you got to enjoy the cruise and to explore the area from a different perspective 🙂
