In the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, the Cascadas de Agua Azul, Cascades of Blue Water, are a series of waterfalls that tumble down the Xanil River. The area was designated a flora and fauna protected area in 2000 by the Mexican government. A refreshing stop and swim on the way to Palenque.

A trail climbs uphill along the river, providing views of many eye-catching spots. Dazzling white waterfalls spash into turquoise pools, sliding over rocks.

And, of course, the vendors are ever-present at every tourist site in Mexico, along the way. This one was the most interesting.

At the top, or as far as we went, is a larger pool that beckons you to wade in.

Agua Azul is so beautiful isn’t it? The turquoise water, travertine rocks, and for us anyway, it was very quiet and peaceful. Did you go for a swim? Maggie

Ir was lovely and there weren’t many people there. Just a quick dip, a bit chilly.

It was pretty quiet when we were there too, but very hot, so the water was refreshing.

This is beautiful! I can’t believe the water is really that color.

Thanks, Diana, that glowing turquoise is real! I’ve seen it before at Semuc Champey in Guatemala, with pools that tumble down the mountainside. I don’t know what causes that color, perhaps some minerals in the water.

The photos of the waters are refreshing to the eye. A person could spend days in that locale simply recuperating from the modern world.

That looks beautiful, and it’s refreshing just to be next to water on a hot day, even if you choose not to swim!

It was a lovely spot, and refreshing, especially after a lot of driving and city stops. I did take a quick dip.

It looks absolutely beautiful and it’s always nice to hear the soothing flow of running water even if you don’t go in!

Like the Sumidero Canyon, not a place I’d expect to find in Mexico. If you’d asked me, “Where in the world?”, I would’ve said the Caribbean or South America.

It was similar to a place I visited in Guatemala, Semuc Champey, with tiered levels and turquoise pools. Most people would not picture Mexico in this way!

It is such an alluring and lovely sport. I wish I had taken a brief video so I could have shared the sound of the waters cascading downhill.
