My last post, A day in Montreal, from late September 2024, describes my wanderings through the town and neighborhoods. After finding these photos from my earlier trip there, this collection seemed a good follow-up, and led to photos from another snowy town to share.
My son was living in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the time, in November of 2014.
Portsmouth

When I visited, we took a brief road trip to Montreal. Driving across the state and up through northern Vermont, we crossed the border into Canada at some unremembered town.

A Canadian Internet friend of my son’s, from online gaming, joined us for dinner and showed us around. Although with few words, here’s another view of the city in snow, with ice rinks and through clouds of cold breath.
Wintry Montreal

Happy New Year! My warmest thanks for those of you who visit my blog regularly, just drop in once in a while, or have only just found this post. It brings me joy to share my images and stories. In past years, I’ve looked ahead with hope to the new year, but I’m wary of the incoming government and what changes that might bring. Here’s hoping 2025 is a good year for you, my friends and readers, with warm friendships, perhaps love, perhaps travel, learning, writing, creating, and enjoying whatever you choose to do.

Thank you, Diana! It does have that classic look, especially in the low-light, dusky, cloud-cover afternoons.

Very pretty! New England, let alone Montréal in Canada, are gorgeous in the wintertime, despite the cold (I’m sure)! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, Ruth, and I look forward to reading more from you in 2025!

Thank you! It’s a charming city, even more so when conversing with people in my very rusty French.

Thanks, Sarah! If you’ve had that reaction, then these images have communicated the feel of walking the city at that time of year.

Montreal is beautiful any time of year isn’t it?! And a typical Canadian scene with skaters on the pond. Let’s hope 2025 isn’t as bad as feared, but we’re pretty concerned up here too. Maggie

Portsmouth looks picturesque – much nicer than the English version that’s for sure!! I love the ice skating, and my favourite photo has to be that shop sign for Random Acts of Sweetness!

Portsmouth, Maine (US) is nice too. Thanks for loving those photos! Friends of mine just closed their little bar (because they were moving) in my town. It was called Sweet Easy, elegant mixed drinks and homemade pies. 😉

Happy new year to you, Ruth! Here in MN we are having another weird winter of freezing cold temps but no snow. I wish my yard looked like some of those Montreal pictures. I hope Colorado weather is behaving normally.

A fine companion piece to your previous post Ruth, I enjoyed these wintry snapshots of Montreal. Ten years must fly by eh? We are back in England now where brrr the scenes are equally chilly, frosty and snowy. Love the almost Dickensian shot of the horse and carriage and the cheeky capture of the scrambling city squirrel.

Not the best time of year to be back north! Thanks for reading and your comments, Leighton. I’m a bit off the grid for a while, so will catch up much later.
