The first time I visited New Zealand in 2010, while I was teaching in Japan, I didn’t spend much time on the North Island. If you’ve been following my last few blog posts, you know I sprained my ankle right before leaving Australia. That story will continue after a few posts about my return trip to New Zealand with my son in December of 2014, when we spent a few days on the North Island before heading south.
Auckland was a welcoming, laid-back city, like Kiwi culture, and it was home base for a few travels around the North Island. We wandered around the city. There I found the most wonderful seafood pasta I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. (The hidden bottom layer was pasta.)

One of our favourite cities. We have been there 5 times, once with a 16 month old. Have a good weekend Ruth. Allan

We didn’t spend much time in the city, but I’m sure it was well worth your many visits!

Great street shots as usual Ruth. I haven’t been to Auckland for many years, but remember the laid back feeling that you’ve captured. Maggie

I hope to visit New Zealand some day, as I haven’t been to that part of the world yet. My parents had gone several years ago, and the photos they took were stunning! The country looks absolutely gorgeous, and I’m glad you had a good time in Auckland. 🙂

I have no doubt you will get there. It only took me 50 years!

I love the bird photos. Also, the street art is amazing.

Thanks. Kiwis are nocturnal and flightless. It was too dark in their enclosure to get a photograph (although I tried).

Beautiful post and wonderful photos, Ruth. While I’ve never been to Auckland or New Zealand, I had the fortune to work with people from Aukland and was quite smitten by their easygoing nature and by how they like to take things as they go, thinking that everything will work out in the end. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thanks so much, Aiva. I could imagine living in New Zealand. Besides the natural beauty, the people are friendly and easygoing. So much more enjoyable than the stress of U.S. cities and work life.

If I wasn’t so anxious to get to the rest of New Zealand, I might have stayed longer. We were always limited by my son’s work schedule when we traveled together.

Great photos Ruth. I’ve been to Auckland a couple of times, but with never enough time to explore the city. We were too full from exploring just about everywhere else in NZ 😂

Beautiful captures from around Auckland. I love all the street art. The birds there look quite different than the ones we have here in Canada!

Thanks. The kiwis were in a dark enclosure since they are nocturnal, so no good photos there. I didn’t take note of who those birds were, but we don’t have them here in Colorado either!

Hey Ruth, some manner of WordPress gremlin has resulted in me apparently unsubscribing to your blog. I have remedied this and see that I have a few to catch up on! Thanks for taking us to Auckland, a city I admittedly know little about. Laid back sounds like my kinda vibe and your images back this up. You got some great bird shots and, as ever, I love all the various captured of art.

Hey Leighton, glad you found me again! Thanks for reading and this big catch-up. New Zealand has a fun and easy-going vibe – it’s a favorite place, so much to explore.
