Falmouth, Woods Hole

My last week on Cape Cod was when the storm hit (Nor’easter), so my explorations of the far southwest corner of the cape were limited. Walks around downtown Falmouth and the surrounding residential area, despite the trees and large branches down in yards along the way, convinced me that, although as picturesque as the tourist towns, this would be a pleasant place to live. There are beaches on both the west coast, Buzzards Bay, and the south, Vineyard Sound, bike trails and gardens, more treasures to uncover on another visit.

The town of Woods Hole felt a bit like a university campus. It is home to many research facilities, most centering on marine studies: primarily Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution or WHOI (pronounced hooey) where my son works, but also Marine Biological Laboratory, National Marine Fisheries, Atlantic Marine Geology (US Geological Survey), and Sea Education Association. No tours of museum or aquarium this time of year or during the pandemic, but I enjoyed walking the main street and poking around.

It’s also the jumping off point for the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. That was on my list for my last days on the cape, but weather interfered. Maybe next time.

  1. Looks like a very quaint, and indeed, pleasant place to live. The public library is very charming with its stone masonry. Despite lots of place being closed and some extreme weather, it must be nice to visit in the off season and experience the quietness of the place.

    1. There are always some challenges when one travels, right? I’m glad to have enjoyed the off season. The only disappointment was the lack of color in most of the trees. I remember resplendent autumns when I lived back east as a child.

  2. It’s a shame you couldn’t get to Martha’s Vineyard, but surely you’ll be back soon to visit! Otherwise, wandering the colonial streets on an overcast day really gives off that true, New England charm!

  3. Being situated so close to the ocean shores, Woods Hole looks like my kind of place. I would love to visit and take a peek inside the Public Library and stop by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Visitors Centre to learn more about the Ocean Ecosystem and life below water! Thanks for sharing and have a nice day 🙂 Aiva xx

  4. I’ve stopped through Woods Hole on my way to Martha’s Vineyard, but didn’t spend much time looking around. It’s a shame you weren’t able to visit Martha’s Vineyard as it’s really charming. We visited during the offseason in October a few years ago and felt like we had the place all to ourselves. It was wonderful. Oh well, this just gives you a good excuse to return someday.

  5. What a quaint place to live and work! I don’t know how your son gets anything done. The vibe strikes me almost like Hawaii, where the days seem so much shorter and slower than on the mainland.

  6. What a pretty, pretty place! Loved the giant anchor and all the seaside references in the architecture. I have just been watching a series called the Sinner which was set in the north east, so I am in the zone!

  7. Wood Hole really does look like a beautiful old university campus. I love your collection of photos. Such a nice variety of styles from nautical to whimsical to traditional…and it all looks so inviting.

  8. As was reading I imagined riding a bike down those streets and stopping to look in the shop windows or the beach. Hope you get a chance to go to Martha’s Vineyard as I know you will capture some great photos. Have a great 😊
