My responses to Angela’s questions:

1 How did you choose the name for your blog? What’s the story behind it?

My name appears as my blog name, but that’s not what I intended! My opening blog page says “Musings from the Mountains.” I’ve moved those words around a few times but the title hasn’t changed. Perhaps that’s because the blog is not on my home page or because I started the blog months after setting up the web site. It’s not important enough for me to spend time to figure out, so I’ve accepted it.

I call my blog Musings from the Mountains because I have returned from living abroad to my mountain home. I started a travel blog in the early 2000s, when I worked out of the country for eight years; it was more of a journal with photos. I created it all in HTML and made the photos small so they would load quickly. That’s old tech now! It was time for an update. I began this current blog about a year ago. So much easier to maintain! I appreciate being able to spend more time on content rather than process mechanics.

2 How do you motivate yourself to keep blogging?

That hasn’t been a problem for me. It does take a while to organize and edit my thoughts each week, so posting once a week works for me. I’m mining the content of my previous web site for some memorable travel stories and photos I think would be of interest to readers, working on improving the writing and being more selective with images. In addition to posts inspired by travel and photos, I sometimes write essays on various topics both from my view of current happenings out there in the world and my own experiences, whatever moves me.

3 If you would create another blog what would it be?

Since this is my second blog creation and is relatively recent, I’m going to stick with this one. The platform will support multiple themes.

4 What hobby do you have beside the blogging?

Art in some form or another has always been part of my life. I was a part-time potter for many decades and love to explore indigenous crafts when I travel. Photography is my current art form, seeing things through a discerning eye, and writing, of course. I’m seeking an agent for my book; I would prefer not to self-publish if I can break into the publishing industry.

I’m also a reader, walker/hiker, nature lover. As a volunteer, I chair a varied Cultural Arts program in my little town and manage a used book store in the local library. I often sit in with a local music jam to play guitar and sing.

5 What are your essential travel apps or gadgets?

Just a few basic app tools: Google Maps, Translate, Currency Converter. I’m not big on gadgets; an electrical adapter is all I need. I do love my BauBax travel jacket with lots of inside pockets, since I don’t like to carry a purse and prefer not to carry things in visible pockets.

6 Once you can plan your next vacation, where will you go?

I had a couple of wonderful trips planned for summer and fall 2020 to Brazil and Myanmar with nonprofit projects, but I’ve let go of the idea of traveling to those places for the near future due to serious virus outbreaks and political developments. I’ll visit family in Massachusetts and Toronto later this year. Europe is sounding good for 2022. We’ll see what the world looks like by then.

7 What superpower would you like to have?

What traveler would not like to disappear and appear somewhere else in the world without hassling with transportation and arrangements? (Beam me up, Scotty!) Easy language translation would be helpful too!

I am pleased to nominate the following bloggers for the Outstanding Blogger Award (in no particular order):

roughwighting

My questions for the nominees:

1 Why do you blog?
2 What themes do you blog about?
3 What do you like to read?
4 Who or what is a person or event that has influenced your life?
5 What’s one thing that’s important to you in your non-blogging life?
6 If you could go back and choose a different career, what would you do?
7 What would you rather be doing right now, instead of writing your answers to these questions?

I hope you will accept the nomination and look forward to reading your answers.

  1. Thank you very much Ruth for your answers! I love them.
You have very interesting hobbies, you will never get bored with it.
My travel question looks like a fantasy question right now, I know…. and I’m not sure if I want to go anywhere as well, even if borders will be open soon. Better to wait….. and dream…… But I absolutely agree with you that quick “transportation machine” would be very helpful. Instead of sitting on the plane for 10 hours….. we can get to the destination place in 2 minutes….
Thank you again for participating. You are an amazing blogger! Good luck with your book! Stay safe!

    1. No problem! I do enjoy reading your poetry and find it inspiring. I’d love to be walking on a beach, any beach, right about now!

I for one have chosen not to participate in all the challenges that fly by on so many blogs, although I enjoy seeing the responses. It’s enough to center on my own work!
